A superb old French viola made by Pierre Hippolyte Silvestre in 1838, as indicated on the original label. This is an outstanding instrument from the most interesting period of the Silvestre work. This master, who was a pupil of Lupot, is definitely belongs to the top several French makers of the highly esteemed time frame. The work is precise, with a wonderful taste and choice of materials and the instrument is covered with a ruby red varnish of spectacular texture. This viola has been preserved in immaculate, unpolished all original condition. The length over the back is 390mm.
