French viola by Auguste Sebastien Philippe Bernardel Pere, 1849

A very fine French viola made by Auguste Sebastien Philippe Bernardel Pere in Paris in 1850, as indicated on the maker’s label, also signed to the back. Bernardel Pere was a pupil of Lupot and one of the best and most interesting French makers. This is a beautiful instrument a very nice state of preservation. This viola has a fine, even, “velvety” voice with a good power and charming character. The length over the back is 38.7 cm.
