German viola bow by Johann Christoph Nurnberger c. 1870.

A very fine, rare German viola bow by Johann Christoph Nurnberger (1839-1899) c. 1870 for the Bausch firm, branded “L. BAUSCH” under the frog. Christoph Nurnberger was one of the first bow makers of the Schonlind Nurnberger family. After initial training Christoph Nurmberger worked for around 6 years in Paris (1860-1866) for J.B. Vuillaume. Ch. Nurnberger opened his own shop when he returned to Markneukirchen (probably around 1867).  Christoph Nurnberger made very nice bows that are influenced by F.N. Voirin and similar to Charles Peccatte style.

This is a beautiful example inspired by the style of F.X. Tourte. This wonderful sounding and handling bow is suitable for a fine musician. The length of the stick is 72.5 cm and the weight of the bow is 68 g. The stick is red brown pernambuco of excellent choice and figuration, round, strong with a nice flexibility, good balance and excellent handling. The frog and button are ebony with silver mountings. The bow is in a very good state of preservation, ready to play.
